Berlin Calling

To Ickarus drugs allow him to enjoy the nightlife scene, add excitement to his life, and also act as a way to cope with his life.

Fans take drugs at the clubs in the bathrooms. They are constantly taking them before, during, and after gigs. The fans take pills, smoke and do “lines” on the back of toilets in the club. They are taking ecstasy, cocaine, LSD, ketamine, and meth. The drugs are sold right in the club.

Ickarus focuses on drugs because it seems to act as an escape from his life and without the drugs he can’t fully escape. Ickarus feels that he focuses better on his music when he is doing drugs and it gives him more excitement for when he is dj-ing.

People from my hometown do not take drugs like the stuff they do in the movie. For the most part the drug of choice is marijuana, not the heavy stuff.

Alice seemed to be in it for the money, while Ickarus’ work ethic would not be accepted. In America he would have lost fans and been plastered all over magazines for his wrong doings. When Ickarus was unstable and his music wasn’t up to par, Alice dropped him, but as soon as she heard his new music and decided it
was good she wanted him back.

The movie Ray about Ray Charles and his life from childhood through his music career is the only movie I can think of that I’ve seen. The movie focuses on Ray’s life as a musician and like Ickarus, Ray also struggles with drugs.

The move Berlin Calling completely surprised me. I was surprised at how graphic, sexually and drug wise, the movie actually was and for being targeted at the younger German culture. The fact that Ickarus is constantly doing drugs, gets sent to rehab, leaves whenever he pleases, makes a top selling record, and uses the hospital as his “prop” for pictures is really unbelievable to me. It seems like such a bad message that is being sent out to the younger population. If Ickarus had been in America most of the things that he does would not have been tolerated here. Things like his trashing the hospital, yet still being let back in to stay, wouldn’t have been tolerated. Another thing that surprises me is that when he finds out his girlfriend has a girlfriend he acts mad and yet they end up having a three-way. The movie turned out better than I thought it was going to be but it is definitely not something I would watch again. I disapproved of the way Ickarus continually treated his girlfriend and how she kept taking him back. I also did not enjoy the end of the movie. I didn’t really believe that it was over at first. It left us wondering whether or not Ickarus was drug free and so on.

Topic Expansion

In 20th century Germany medicine was still expanding. Some of the biggest discoveries (medicine boom) were discovered in this time. One important discovery was that of Bayer aspirin which is still found in stores today. Another thing that was happening in early Germany was the introduction of universal health care. Today in our country universal health care is being debated so seeing how that is still in play/use today is quite intriguing. During the reign of the Nazi, they “tested” drugs on the Jews in concentration camps essentially killing them. In an attempt to create a “perfect” soldier, the Nazi’s created a cocaine based drug to keep them going for hours without tiring.
